A WiFi password that is strong and easy to share
WiFi passwords can be attacked offline: anyone in range can capture the handshake when a device connects and then test guesses at high speed. That makes length important. The default 20 letters and numbers, with look-alike characters removed, give about 116 bits, well beyond any practical attack.
Typing a long password into a smart TV is tedious, so this page also builds a standard WiFi QR code. Enter your network name and phones running iOS or Android can join by pointing the camera at the code. Print it as a card for guests.
Picking a style
- Letters and numbers is the default and works on every device.
- With symbols adds a small set of symbols that routers accept.
- Words creates something like orbit-maple-canyon-lamp-42, easy to read aloud to visitors.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a WiFi password be?
WPA2 and WPA3 accept 8 to 63 characters. Use at least 16 random characters or four random words. Short WiFi passwords are a common way into home networks.
Is my network name sent anywhere when I make the QR code?
No. The QR code is drawn in your browser and nothing you type on this page is uploaded.
Do I also need to change the router password?
Yes. The router’s admin password is separate from the WiFi password. Change it from the default to a different strong password.
